Set in the heart of historic West Chester, PA, Bleecker Hall is a 7,500-square-foot home rich with local significance. Our work here honored the home's original spirit while thoughtfully reimagining it for modern life—layering history, craftsmanship, and lasting character throughout.

REIMAGINING FUNCTIONALITY

After many Covid months at home with three active pre-teen boys, our clients were ready to take on a big renovation and redesign. Prior to the start of the project, the double long foyer was used for full-court basketball and the parlor was used as a makeshift playroom for countless lego projects, games, and crafts. The rear of the house, once carved into a separate apartment, was prime for being reincorporated into the main house. The now ample kitchen and dining room are entertaining-ready and the primary suite above it is thoughtfully reimagined as part of the now single family home.

OUR APPROACH TO SOURCING

From the start, our sourcing approach was guided by quality, longevity, and locality. We partnered with Bluebell Fine Cabinetry to design and build the custom cabinetry, crafted just 30 miles from the project site in New Holland, PA. The new custom upholstery throughout the project was made just 40 miles away, and sixteen vintage finds were reupholstered within 12 miles. Nearly 93% of furnishings were made in the U.S. or sourced as vintage—many from Pennsylvania. This local-first approach wasn’t just about sustainability—it gave us control at a time when global supply chains were unpredictable, allowed the budget to stretch further, and connected our clients more deeply to their home.

CELEBRATION OF PLACE

We tapped many West Chester-based trades and craftspeople for the specialized work needed throughout the renovation of this local landmark, known as one of the "Four Sisters". Work included the restoration of historic windows by R&B Restoration Carpentry and original door hardware by Monroe Coldren & Son. Locally quarried serpentine stone, salvaged by our clients, was used on the powder room addition to match the original exterior cladding done in the same material. Our clients are passionate about their role as stewards of this special home and generously opened their doors as part of the West Chester Public Library’s Holiday Home Tour fundraiser. It was nominated this spring for the West Chester Downtown Foundation’s Preservation Award (to be announced this summer).
